A consumer electronics device that serves as a gateway between a television and the Internet (over a telephone line or a cable connection).
In IPTV networks, the set-top box (STB) receives encoded (and compressed) digital signals from the network and decodes (and decompresses) the signals, converting them into analog signals that are displayed on a TV. The STB also receives commands from the user (via a remote control) and transmits the commands back to the television network.
