out-of-pocket

Refers to expenses paid out of your own pocket (as opposed to being paid on a company expense account). For example, "That consulting gig went awry; he had to slap on a PITA fee just to get reimbursed for his out-of-pocket expenses."

This phrase has also come to mean "unavailable," as in, "I've got two meetings with him tomorrow afternoon, so I'll be out-of-pocket until Wednesday."
