hot desking

a.k.a. hoteling
Hot desking or hoteling is where workers share a communal array of workstations instead of having their own desk.

Historical perspective: Hoteling took off during the pandemic because companies downsized their office footprint, but the musical chairs nature of hot desking on a busy day gave employees more reasons to stay home. In 2024, well past the pandemic, employers lured workers back to the office with a traditional perk: their own desk.
