When two similarly spelled words sound alike but mean different things, like "rose" - it can mean a flower or the past tense of rise. English is full of homonyms, here are a few more: "lie" - as in to tell an untruth or to lie down); "bear" like the animal and "bear" with someone as in to put up with ;)
