high agency

a.k.a. high-agency

A newer term than disruptor, high agency refers to a mindset that involves taking control of your life and actively pursuing your goals. People with "high agency" are action-oriented, optimistic, and enthusiastic, and tend to see opportunities where others see obstacles. For example, an employer who was put off by an applicant’s complaints about the limitations they felt at their previous job, would say "That’s not a high-agency attitude."

Historical perspective: High agency was considered the corporate buzzword of 2025. First coined in 2016 by venture capitalist Eric Weinstein, who linked the "high-agency" mindset to a "MacGyver" approach to corporate problem-solving, the term was used to describe especially driven entrepreneurs. Like many great internet terms, it has morphed to include anyone who refuses to take "no" for an answer, with Elon Musk cited as the poster child for high agency thinking.
