GPU

graphics-processing chips

GPUs are graphics-processing chips on which models like ChatGPT are trained.

Historical perspective: GPUs require a lot of energy to make AI wizardry happen and like cryptocurrency, are considered “energy addicts.” According to Equinix, which rents out data centers, a typical server rack requires 10 to 15 kilowatts (KW) of power whereas an AI one that’s built around GPUs requires 40 to 60 KW. For example, a ChatGPT search may consume 10 times the electricity of a Google search.
