Structured Query Language(pronounced: see-quill)
The standardized query language used for requesting information from a database.
Historical perspective: The original version (called SEQUEL, for Structured English Query Language) was designed at an IBM research center in 1974 and 1975. SQL was introduced as a commercial database system by Oracle in 1979, and it refers to either of two database management software products from Sybase and Microsoft.
