Online jargon, also known as [[text message|text message]] shorthand, used primarily in texting, online chat, instant messaging, [[e-mail or email|email]], blogs, and newsgroup postings, it is spelled in all lowercase because it's also considered a form of leetspeak.
It was adopted in response to 143 and 459 and vaguely corresponds to how the numbers look and sound: "1" looks like "I," "8" sounds like "hate," "2" sounds like "you."
