Founded in 1985, America Online, was based in Dulles, Virginia, and became the world's leader in interactive services, Web brands, Internet technologies, and e-commerce services. It operated AOL, with more than 30 million members; and several leading Internet brands, including ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger and the Netscape products and more.
AOL built alliances with leading technology companies, expanded overseas, and merged with media giant Time Warner, which operates HBO, Time, Turner Broadcasting, Warner Brothers, and other major entities. AOL and Time Warner merged on Jan. 10, 2000 and it was considered the largest deal in history. As of 2014, AOL content sites and products serve more than 250 million visitors around the world.
